Platform Support Structure

Not a lot of people know this......

There has been very little publicity made of the fact that WGH was involved in the London Eye project.

Although the ride was the most highly publicised single Millennium project in the U.K., WGH's technical expertise was not easily visible through the razz-matazz of the launch. The importance of the company's contribution, however, is fundamental to the operation of the ride and safety of the passengers.

When the 135m high wheel was manufactured, it was envisaged that the combination of manufacturing tolerances and windage could cause the gondolas to move in relation to the loading platform by up to 800mm. The diameter of the wheel could also change by up to 400mm due to seasonal variations in temperature. It was, therefore, necessary to design a platform system, which would automatically compensate for the variations in geometry.

WGH designed and supplied the automated system used on the loading platform, together with the automated loading gates, which are synchronised with the passenger capsules, as they move past the loading platform.
